First Book Canada - Free Books

First Book Canada is a program that gives access to new books for children in need.

This has been a great program for students in need.

In the United States, educators can now  receive free access to Open eBook by signing up with First Book. These free ebooks can be accessed on iOS or Android devices.  Through the Open eBooks app students can access up to ten books at a time.  You can find all of the qualifications for the Open eBooks program here.  Hope that this comes to Canada.  I mention this so that you can keep an eye out.

Book Adventure

Book Adventure is for kids from K-8.  It is a free reading site.  "Students can search for books, read them offline, take quiz on what they read and earn prizes for their reading success."
There is a teacher lounge where you can create your classroom and monitor your students progress.

Free Kids Books

There are several websites listed on this blog where you can access free audio books for kids.  Another site where you can get free books would be http://freekidsbooks.org/.  You can read online or download the pdf version.

Comic Master

Comic Master is a graphic novel creator.  Like other comic generators, comic master has drag and drop features for students to create their comic pages.  Comic master allows students to save their work so that they have the option to go back to edit their work.  Once they are finished, students can print their short graphic novel.  http://www.comicmaster.org.uk/

Storybook Publishing.... Student Publishing

Boom Writer

I'm always searching for new literacy ideas to motivate my students to read and write. On several sites I read about BoomWriter so I decided to investigate what it is all about. A guest author writes the starter chapter. Students write the following chapter within an allotted time anonymously. Their peers vote on the best chapter. The winning chapter gets added into the book which is then published. A great way to motivate students to write. http://www.boomwriter.com/

Digital Books

My class and teaching partner's class created their own poems and typed them on the computer, drew pictures that reflected their poems and then each student scanned his own picture. Then each student took their picture and added it as a background for their poem. Once all this was done, each class created a digital book of poetry using Photostory.
